What is the Carbon Compact?

The Carbon Compact is the world’s most innovative two-piece surfboard system. The compact design disassembles to fit into a small board bag, taking the hassle out of traveling and storing large surfboards. Fit it in the trunk of a car, carry it on the train, or pass it through most airport baggage claims without extra fees.

Construction & Design

The Carbon Compact is hand shaped out of recycled Marko Foam, then glassed with Green Room Epoxy Resin—three layers of 4 ounce glass on the deck and two layers of 4 ounce glass on the bottom. The two carbon fiber tubes keep the board strong without sacrificing flex, and the titanium bolts secure a tight seal. Carbon fiber strips can be added to reinforce the board's structural integrity.

Patented Design

The Carbon Compact board was designed by Mike Becker and granted a full US Utility Patent in 2013. He engineered the ideal board for traveling that is easy to assemble and strong enough to withstand the heaviest surf.

Testimonials

“Both Hobie and Morey Pope made a few two- and three-piece boards in the 60’s when I was growing up. The main problem then was that boards were already nearly 30 pounds and it just made them even heavier. Somewhere in the early 90’s Karl Pope who had an engineering degree, re-introduced the two-piece board that was now much lighter. I was excited to own one and had him taking my shapes and making them into a two-piece boards for me to carry around inside my car so no one would know that I was a surfer, which wasn’t something you wanted to advertise a few decades ago! I was his guinea pig and was living in Northern California, so I could test their limits in punishing waves. He designed them to break apart rather than damage the board if a heavy wipeout occurred. The problem is that after a bad wipeout the front half of the board would cleanly break the bolts and carbon fiber shaft, leaving no damage to either half BUT then the front half would go into the rocks and you would be left tethered to the back end to try and paddle it in looking for the remains! After five or six years he abandoned the whole project and stopped making the boards and I was left lamenting that I could not get them anymore. Enter the Carbon Compact; probably six years ago I was at the boardroom show in Del Mar and was delighted to see the Carbon Compact booth displaying a similar two-piece board technology, but was vastly superior! There were two large carbon fiber rods instead of only one and also large titanium lag bolts crisscross from the deck and the bottom rather than one clamp on each side. I could tell immediately that it was superior and just what I wanted. I was fortunate that Mike Becker agreed to take on my shaped blanks and convert them into his two-piece technology. For the past six years, I have owned at least four or five of them personally and made another six or seven for customers. I have traveled with mine to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and Mexico and surfed them in large winter waves at all of those locations. Not once has there been any fatigue of parts or failure of the board where it is placed together. I have 100% confidence that is it is at the very minimum as strong as if not stronger than a conventional board as far as breaking goes. For traveling, you can’t beat it, especially when taking longer boards that the airlines don’t like. I highly recommend the Carbon Compact process as the best that has been achieved in the world of surfing.”

“I own four Carbon Compact boards – a 9' 9", 9' 6", 8' 0" and 7' 10" – and I wouldn’t travel with anything else. I've squeezed them into a puddle jumper aircraft and on airlines that don’t accept surfboards as luggage. Mike Becker and his crew have done a great job for me.”
David E. Wood – California

“I'm a long-time surfer (started in '72) and am quite particular about my equipment. I’ve owned over 70 boards through the years, all from top shapers. Mike has built three Carbon Compact boards for me to date, the first a gunny longboard about five years ago. Can't say enough about the performance, build quality, and durability. Top notch. The gunny 10' handled hurricane clean-up days beautifully—never had so much confidence in a board. Then he built me a SUP (I'm getting old haha, aged out of hurricane days) and an 11' glider, which is one of the most beautiful boards I've ever owned (white with black carbon rails – stunning). The CC system is designed perfectly—from my car to fully assembled in a few minutes. Game changer! Two carbon tubes and four bolts, that's it. And the fact that the board splits in two never occurs to me in the water—it's all about the waves, which is all it should ever be about.”
